Abstract

The popularity of waterproof technology in textiles has been increasing due to its usefulness in physiological needs of human associated with the use of garments. While the early waterproof technology focused on protecting the wearer from wetting, research has extended the technology into technical applications. This attracts a critical research of waterproof technology in relation to medical application. In this regard, this chapter provides basic concepts of waterproof and water repellent including the relationship between wettability and contact angle. A critical review of the chemistry and mechanism of water-repellent finishes has been reported. The chapter further discusses recent advancement of waterproof technology for pathogen protection including the application of nanomaterial as both waterproof and antipathogen finishes. Conclusively, the future trend of textile finishes relies on the use of nanomaterial to provide multifunctional finishes.
