Abstract

This chapter discusses a traditional approach to trigonometry that revolves about the measurement of triangles. It explains how it is possible to define the trigonometric functions in terms of the angles and sides of a right triangle. This presents an opportunity to explore a wide variety of applications that clearly demonstrate the usefulness of trigonometry in fields such as surveying and navigation. The chapter explores the law of sines and cosines and presents two important rules that can be employed when dealing with an oblique triangle, that is, a triangle that does not contain a right angle. It also explains how the trigonometric functions of an acute angle are related to the ratios of the sides of a right triangle.
