Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of trigonometry. For angles θ between θ and 1/π, the trigonometric functions can be interpreted as ratios of sides of a right triangle, one of whose angles is θ. This chapter presents the proof for four basic triangle laws, the law of cosines, the law of sines, the law of tangents, and the area formula. The law of tangents provides an alternative method to solve a triangle with given two sides and their included angle. It is better suited to computations with logarithms than is the law of cosines. Formulas of Newton and Mollweide are useful for checking logarithmic solutions. An angle inscribed in a circle is equal to half of the corresponding central angle.
