Abstract
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most successful and commonly performed surgical procedures. The primary indication is relief of the significant, disabling pain caused by severe arthritis. The preoperative planning, with accurate physical and radiographic examination, is of paramount importance for the outcomes of reconstructive surgery and is important in avoiding an unstable TKA and the related complications. The surgeon must determine the status of the collateral ligaments, and should determine if bone loss is present and what type of prosthesis will be needed. Radiographic templates and modern digital computer software have been developed to assist the surgeon in the preoperative planning process, allowing increasing information on the patient and reducing the need for taking intraoperative decisions and extra surgery time.
