Abstract

This chapter discusses the manufacture of graded ceramic matrix composites using infiltration techniques. The scope of this chapter is broaden by focusing on the synthesis of graded alumina/aluminum titanate (A/AT) and alumina/calcium hexaluminate (A/CA6) systems. Graded composition profiles of A/AT composites were monitored by using X-ray diffraction and grazing incident synchrotron radiation diffraction, whereas graded composition and development profiles of A/CA6 composites were conducted using in situ high-temperature neutron diffraction and synchrotron radiation diffraction. The influences of AT or CA6 addition on the mechanical properties for both graded composites are also examined.
