Abstract

Genetic solutions are essential components of an integrated approach to improve welfare in the sheep industry. Examples of breeding strategies applied to the welfare issues are given and discussed in the context of the challenges of establishing welfare-related traits, as novel and difficult to measure traits, in a breeding programme. This includes an overview of the methodology that has been used to value welfare traits, which are consumer driven, but do not necessarily translate directly into higher profit for producers.
