Abstract

Livestock farming requires the management of animals so as to optimise their production and health. This management includes regular handling and a number of husbandry procedures. The latter may be fairly innocuous (e.g. backlining with an ectoparasiticide for lice) or painful (e.g. castration). These husbandry procedures are carried out so as to reduce health problems, to increase productivity, to facilitate management or as a means to harvest a particular product. A number of husbandry and veterinary procedures are routinely carried out on sheep.
