Abstract

Electrophoresis has been used to separate charged molecules in microchips. This chapter deals with an experiment in which dye-tagged amino acid samples are separated in a microchannel by applying electric field across the channel. The chapter starts by giving background information on electrophoretic separation and pinched injection. Next sections cover topics related to the design of the microfluidic device, chemicals and materials required and hazard associated with this experiment. The experimental section includes step-by-step procedure for separation and data analysis. Additional notes that may help instructors and students are also highlighted. Assessment questions will be helpful to judge students knowledge on the experiment. References at the end of the chapter may be helpful for further reading.
