Abstract

Bowel wall thickening may be focal, segmental, or diffuse. Causes of bowel wall thickening are manifold and include infection, inflammatory bowel disease (i.e., Crohn disease), ischemia, and neoplasm. The degree and symmetry of thickening, length of involvement, pattern of attenuation and presence or absence of perienteric abnormalities help narrow the differential diagnosis. However, there is significant overlap in the computed tomography appearance of various bowel pathologies.
