Abstract

Cirrhosis is the response of liver tissue to the chronic injury caused by external agents, microbiological structures, or autoimmune factors. Collagen producing liver stellate cells are activated by cytokines, and fibrotic scarring occurs as a response to the injury. Nodular regeneration accompanies fibrotic scarring and nonfunctional scar tissue replaces functional liver tissue cells. Imaging is critically important to diagnose cirrhosis and follow patients with known cirrhosis. Characteristic imaging findings of cirrhosis are easy to diagnose. Strong disease management with the help of periodic imaging may stop progression to liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. In this chapter, we present several imaging methods to diagnose cirrhosis, with focus on characteristic imaging findings.
