Abstract

In this paper the construction steps of a Social Adaptation Skills Scale for Turkish children. (SASS-T) are presented. The scale is completed by mothers. Firstly, 45 items selected by examining various social skills scales were adapted to Turkish culture and 71 items were developed by the researchers and 116 item SASS-T first form was constructed. Secondly, this form was completed by the mothers of 340 healthy and 153 mildly retarded or psychologically diagnosed children (N= 493). By computing item total correlations SASS-T was reduced to 59 item. Factor analysis computations yielded 7 sub scales for the 59 item SASS-T. Split half and Cronbach Alpha coefficients of .94 -.57 indicates that the internal reliability of the scale is high. Man Whitney U comparisions for unequal samples yielded that the total and all sub scale scores for healthy group are meaningfully low from the diagnose groups which is an important finding indicating the validity of the scale.
