Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed cyclization of 5-alkyl-5-[2-(o-iodophenylcarbamoyl)vinyl] derivatives of Meldrum's acid produces 3-alkylidene oxindoles containing the Meldrum's acid moiety. These compunds can be useful synthetic intermediates. An application to the synthesis of functionalized carbazoles through the intermediacy of 3,5,6-trisubstituted 2H-pyran-2-ones is reported.
