Abstract

The chapter introduces and discusses the tribology of metallic materials and their alloys. Friction and wear of cast iron and iron-based alloys were remarked emphasizing the role of carbon content and the effect of hardness and nitriding. The present chapter will briefly cover the tribology of copper, brass, and aluminum. A focus is to understand some characteristic phenomena associated with friction and wear of alloys including magnesium-, titanium-, tin-, and nickel-based alloys. The discussion then turns toward highlighting the friction and wear of metal matrix composites MMCs. It also summarizes the various factors affecting their tribological performance such as volume fraction of particles, particle size, and type and shape of the particle. In the final section of this chapter, some tribological applications are described with an example of abrasive wear, adhesive wear, and high-temperature applications.
