Abstract

This chapter discusses the design and development of training systems. The success of a technology-based training (TBT) project depends on an initial investment of time in the form of a feasibility study. Failure to analyze the organizational, instructional, technical, and budgetary issues can have disastrous effects. A primary result of an efficient feasibility study is a genuine training requirement. Unanimous agreement on the existence of a training problem influences the level of commitment to the solution. Technology in training necessitates and encourages a logical approach to the design, development and evaluation of instructional material. The aim of using a logical approach is to create instructional material which is appropriate and cost effective. There are many factors that will affect the success of TBT within an organization. One of them is indicated by the term enthusiast approach, that is, the lack of unanimous agreement on the existence of a training need, which can be appropriately satisfied by the use of TBT.
