Abstract

Marine radar is normally installed in vessels for navigation. The marine radar images used for oil spill detection are convenient and expedient to obtain. In marine radar images, the intensity of the backscattered signal in an oil spill area is weaker than in the neighboring waters, which is a phenomenon that can be exploited to detect oil spills. In this part, oil spill detection methods by marine radar images are introduced. Firstly, basic concepts of marine radar are described. Then, image preprocessing methods for oil spill detection are introduced, including coordinate transformation, suppressing shared-frequency interference, and interference of noise pixels. Thirdly, power attenuation correction method, texture analysis method, adaptive threshold method, and machine learning algorithms are discussed for oil spill detection. Based on these methods, oil spill can be well detected and extracted by marine radar images.
