Abstract

The breast surgeon is the first responder in the diagnosis of a woman with breast cancer. Breast surgeons have in-depth knowledge of the multiple disciplines caring for the woman with breast cancer to help navigate the appropriate steps for her treatment. However, in the United States and Canada, the breast surgeon demonstrates a major weakness in knowledge and implementation of the multiple oncoplastic surgical options available for reconstruction. Breast surgeons can safely perform basic oncoplastic techniques, such as hidden incisions and simple volume displacement procedures. Educating and training breast surgeons in these basic techniques will elevate the level of breast cancer care for all women. With the understanding that improved cosmesis is in the best interest of the patient, the breast surgeon should be inclined to partner with the plastic surgeon to provide all women with the best oncologic and cosmetic outcome.
