Abstract

The concepts of hazard, vulnerability, and resilience are inseparable from one another. This chapter is an overview of each area and how they interrelate. In particular, some debates within vulnerability literature are identified, and different approaches to understanding resilience. The concept of resilience is gaining increasing traction within the practice of disaster management but has great challenges in terms of being operationalized. This is an enormous topic that one chapter cannot possibly do justice to, and the reader is encouraged to do further reading.
