Abstract

Although all patients with cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) exhibit some pattern of episodic, stereotypical attacks of repetitive vomiting, the pathogenesis of this complex disorder remains elusive. However, the clinical recognition of CVS subtypes offers insight not only into potential disease pathways that may operate in CVS but also suggests specific treatments that could be tailored to individuals (i.e., personalized medicine). This chapter outlines the current understanding of the various CVS subtypes and discusses the implications of these subtypes for specific disease mechanisms and treatment options.
