Abstract

Bowen disease (in situ squamous cell carcinoma [in situ SCC]) and erythroplasia of Queyrat (EQ) are forms of intraepidermal SCC, with the latter located on the penis. This chapter examines the current guidance and up-to-date literature on the management of Bowen disease. Several treatment options are available for both Bowen disease and EQ and aim to prevent progression to invasive SCC. First-line therapies for Bowen disease include photodynamic therapy, cryotherapy, electrodesiccation and curettage, and standard excision. Second-line therapies include topical treatments, e.g., 5-fluorouracil, imiquimod 5%, and Mohs micrographic surgery. The strongest evidence was for topical photodynamic therapy, 5-fluorouracil, and imiquimod, as well as cryotherapy. Third-line therapies, including laser and radiotherapy, have a more limited evidence base. Similar therapeutic options are available for patients with EQ; however, treatment tolerability is a greater challenge.
