Abstract

Sepiolite is a naturally occurring hydrated magnesium-rich silicate clay mineral with fiber-shaped crystalline morphologies, special pore structures, and active surface groups. As a natural nanoscale material, sepiolite has been widely applied in many as areas, including adsorption, catalysis, polymer composites, energy, biomedicine, electronic conductor, and animal feeding. This chapter comprehensively summarizes the latest research progress on the origin and distribution, the structure, physic-chemical properties, surface modification, and nanocomposites of sepiolite. We introduce in detail the potential applications of sepiolite in the fabrication of functional materials. Future research and application prospects of sepiolite are also proposed. In recent years, the “Green and Sustainable” idea is attracting more and more attention. Natural nanomaterials show great application prospects in the fields of modern industry and new materials. This chapter will provide useful reference for understanding the naturally available fibrous clay mineral sepiolite and arouse more attention on its valuable applications in functional materials.
