Abstract

The solid waste material that comes from a city of household collection and transportation is the costliest stage in a waste management program. In this paper, commonly used solutions to improve solid waste management and collection systems are discussed and a methodology based on the internet of things is proposed as a new solution. The methodology proposes the use of infrared sensors to gather real-time data from the waste bins and that of Raspberry Pi2 Development Board to communicate this information to the waste managers. The waste managers can effectively use this information to optimize the scheduling and routing of the collection process.
