Abstract

This chapter discusses combined direct and bending stress. The direct or normal stress may be tensile or compressive and is defined as applied force per unit cross-sectional area, that is, direct stress = applied force/ cross-sectional area, or σd = F/A. Bending stresses are induced by externally applied bending moments. The relationship between bending stress and bending moment is given by σb. The chapter also discusses combined bending and direct stress and core or kern of section.
