Abstract
The world currently faces two important threats with respect to energy consumption, namely fossil fuel depletion and environmental pollution. The clean skies during the pandemic lockdown proved that a reduction in fossil energy consumption could revitalize the Earth with a return to a less-polluted atmosphere. However, the severe restrictions on certain industries could pose problems to the economic status of many countries. Being one of the most abundant resources, biomass could be effectively used as a raw material for generating advanced biofuels to satisfy the power needs of the industrial and transportation sectors. Among the various energy conversion technologies, pyrolysis is the most effective technique to extract energy from biomass. The yield and quality of the products can be effectively enabled by controlling the reaction atmosphere. With this in mind, this chapter is entirely devoted to discussing the design and modeling of the pyrolysis process along with its applications in commercial sectors.
