Abstract
Bezoars are aggregates or concretions of retained, undigested material commonly found in the stomach. Materials responsible include plant fibers (phytobezoars), persimmon (diospyrobezoar), hair (trichobezoar), milk protein (lactobezoar), paper, medications (pharmacobezoar), and others. The clinical presentation depends on type and may include feeding intolerance, early satiety, vomiting, or abdominal distension. The diagnosis can be made by history and physical exam though abdominal radiography or contrast studies may be useful. Many techniques have been described to dissolve or disrupt, retrieve, and fragment the bezoar. Prevention generally involves understanding individual risk of recurrence coupled with lifestyle change.
