Abstract

Rapid growth in the use of materials and population shifts from rural to urban areas have made the disposal of wastes a major task of municipal governments all over the world. The more advanced nations have responded to this crisis by developing waste-to-energy (WTE) technologies that convert solid wastes to electricity and heat, thus phasing out landfilling. Examples are provided of nations and cities that have approached sustainable waste management by means of a combination of recycling, composting and WTE.
