Abstract

This chapter elucidates the directives for safety of electrical products. Electrical product safety has been mandated in Europe since the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) first came into force in 1973—then, as now, its general requirement can be summarized by the eleventh commandment: “Thou shalt not put unsafe products on the market.” This seems simple, but there are many products both in the marketplace and currently in development that will fail to achieve this fundamental requirement, andthis is briefly explained in this chapter. The 1973 LVD was updated as a part of the European Commission's Single Market activities in an attempt to make its implementation more consistent. The original LVD required electrical equipment to comply with the minimum levels of safety, but because it pre-dated the New Approach Directives, there was no mechanism to allow the manufacturers (and importers) to signify conformance.
