Abstract

This chapter focuses on the first part of a mass identification process, namely collecting and evaluating the data. First, unidentified remains or what is more commonly known as post mortem (PM) samples are addressed. In addition to briefly describing the sample collection, concepts related to profile quality, such as drop-out, drop-in, and genotyping errors, will be covered. Secondly, this chapter covers reference samples, commonly known as ante mortem (AM) samples. This chapter discusses different types of reference data, e.g., direct reference versus relatives. Validation of PM and AM data to ensure quality is also addressed.
