Abstract

This chapter introduces the essential genetic background, with a special focus on mass identifications. We address the broader context of this book, briefly touching upon subjects such as DNA analysis in forensic applications, inheritance, genetic markers, technologies, mutations, as well as a background in statistical theory. We introduce the likelihood ratio, Bayes' theorem, and simulations, all of which are central in the subsequent statistical evaluations.
