Abstract

Standards are documents that establish the methods for manufacturing and testing. Codes are documents that establish design practices, including factors of safety and efficiency. Recommended practices are documents that establish industry-accepted practices. The most important code for pressure-piping systems is ASME B31. The four principle parts that are of particular interest to plant piping and pipeline systems are: B31.1 “Power Piping,” B31.3 “Process Piping,” B31.4 “Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquid Hydrocarbons and Other Liquids,” and B31.8 “Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems.” Each of these codes is reviewed in detail in this chapter.
