Abstract

The aim of the chapter entitled: “General requirements of electrospun materials for tissue engineering: Setups and strategy for successful electrospinning in laboratory and industry” is to introduce some of the basic aspects of the use of electrospinning processes for tissue engineering (TE) applications. The similarity of the nanofibers to the natural extracellular matrix of many tissues and the importance of nanofibers in TE applications are highlighted. The requirements of electrospinnable materials for fabrication of tissue-engineered scaffolds and the most commonly utilized polymers and solvents are presented and briefly discussed. Further various electrospinning setups and technologies for obtaining different kinds of fibers and meshes with patterned surface are introduced and described. The chapter finishes with basic requirements of the upscaling of electrospinning processes from laboratory to industry scale.
