Abstract
Since composites are neither homogeneous nor isotropic, drilling raises specific problems that can be related to subsequent damage in the region around the holes. The chapter first discusses theoretical models of delamination for various drill bits which explain the correlation between drilling-induced delamination and thrust force. Delamination measurement and assessment, and the influence of drilling parameters on drilling-induced delamination are next considered. Producing a consistent delamination-free hole still provides a vigorous challenge for the future.
