Abstract

Wood is probably the best known and widely recognized natural composite material: the cellulose fibers are arranged in complex bunches and are bonded with lignin. The decrease in ‘fresh’ wood resources, combined with the need to make use of the waste products resulting from wood processing, have made further developments in wood-based composite materials highly desirable. Combining wood with other materials allows composites to be developed with specific desirable characteristics, which are often better than the properties of wood alone. To achieve these properties, special techniques and tools for machining are required. Developments in improving the materials for tool production, as well as new construction methods for the machines, help to process wood-based composite materials efficiently while still ensuring a high quality product. Such developments are discussed in this chapter.
