Abstract

HPVs are a heterogeneous group of small and non-enveloped viruses with a single molecule of double-stranded circular DNA genome. The papillomavirus genome is divided into three regions. All members of papillomavirus genus share an upstream regulatory region (URR), the early proteins E1 and E2 and the late proteins L1 and L2. HPVs have been classified based on their DNA sequence heterogeneity. The similarity of the L1 open reading frame is, currently, the basis for classification of HPVs. Papillomaviruses can be differentiated into types, subtypes and variants.
