Abstract

Globalization and industrialization have led to the consumption of packaged foods around the world. Today, food and packaging are synonymous because of distribution to an ever-growing global population. A variety of plastics in single-layer and multilayer forms are used in the construction of packaging of perishable and nonperishable foods. Applications of plastics in contact with food, in the developed regions, are regulated through a body of laws that are constantly updated. The Food and Drug Administration issued the first guidance in the United States in 1949.
