Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the survey data on the perception of disaster safety by adolescents during the COVID-19 period, using the data from the 2020 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). As a large social disaster, COVID-19 could affect the adolescents' responses in addition to their perceptions of disasters. Therefore, we applied the item response tree model to analyze the response patterns. The results showed that adolescents generally felt safe from disasters such as COVID-19, but their perceptions of disaster safety differed between safety of individuals and that of society. In addition, it was confirmed that there were negative extreme response styles and positive extreme response styles, which represent excessive anxiety and excessive indifference to disasters, respectively. Moreover, the adolescents' perceptions of disaster safety were related to life satisfaction, happiness, and the degree of knowledge of disaster response measures. We also proposed the utilization and follow-up studies of the research results.
