Abstract

Even though the expression “chemical or thermochemical storage” is widely used for storage systems involving any interaction between two or more components for thermal energy storage, this chapter focuses solely on reversible chemical reactions and their special characteristics. Therefore in the first part, main specific properties of gas-gas and gas-solid reactions are summarized and important reaction characteristics for the development of thermal storages are separately deduced. In the second part, potential applications for both principles are discussed on the basis of selected examples from literature.
