Abstract

This chapter focuses on mixer and agitation equipment, typically used in stirred tanks. Impeller types are listed and compared. Equations for dimensional analysis are presented: Reynolds number, pumping number, and power number. Blending operations are discussed with equations to estimate the time for blending Newtonian and shear-thinning fluids in laminar or turbulent regimes. Solids suspension operations are discussed; impeller speed and power equations are given. Gas dispersion is discussed along with design equations. In-line mixers are described and specification requirements are tabulated. High shear mixers are introduced. Powder mixers are discussed with a flow chart to help determine the appropriate type of mixer. Equations for mechanical design are given, including determination of shaft diameter and critical speed.
