Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the state of the art and of the advanced technologies for the bearings employed in steam turbines. Both journal and thrust bearings are taken into account. After a description of bearing morphology, bearing design is analyzed, under both the point of view of the components and of the advanced methods for the calculation of static and dynamic characteristics, and for experimental testing. Test-rigs for the evaluation of bearing characteristics are also described. Eventually, advanced materials for bearing coating are described, along with their advantages and drawbacks with respect to standard babbitt metals and a discussion is presented about reducing power losses in the bearings.
