Abstract

Estimating local scouring associated with grade control structures like block ramps constructed in rivers and streams is an important feature of their design. This experimental study investigates the bed deformations at the downstream of the block ramp. This chapter focuses on the temporary bed profiles due to the flow over inclined block ramps having three different slopes (S=0.3, 0.25, and 0.2). Mobile bed runs were performed in a straight hydraulic flume for different discharges, and longitudinal bed profiles were measured. The maximum scour depth increases with discharge and slope of the ramp. It was also observed that the maximum scour depth and length varies according to the bed grade size. Quantification of energy loss was also performed over the ramps. The magnitude of energy loss was found to be dependent on the ramp slope and macroroughness flow conditions.
