Abstract

Environment friendly or “green” polymers are those that are produced from renewable resource raw materials such as corn or that are biodegradable or compostable. This is a developing area in packaging materials and though there are a relatively limited number of polymers used commercially, they will certainly become more numerous and more common in the future. Chemical structures of monomer and polymers, manufacturers and trade names along with typical end uses of the plastics are included besides extensive tabular and graphical permeation properties. Materials included in this chapter are polyanhydrides, polyglycolic acid, Cellophane™, nitrocellulose, and other cellulose-based plastics, polycaprolactone, poly(lactic acid), and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate.
