Abstract

Friction stir welding and processing (FSW/FSP) are relatively new solid-state joining and processing techniques. In particular, they have been used to join and process high-strength aerospace aluminum alloys and other metallic alloys that are hard to weld by conventional fusion welding. Recently, FSW/FSP were developed for joining and processing of polymeric materials. In this chapter, the current understanding and development of the FSW and FSP of polymers and polymer composites are addressed. Particular emphasis has been given to mechanisms responsible for the formation of welds and composites and the effects of FSW/FSP parameters on resultant microstructure and final mechanical properties and appearances.
