Abstract

Lichen simplex chronicus is characterized by lichenified plaques in response to chronic localized scratching or rubbing. Psychogenic factors and neurogenic abnormalities can be important contributory factors. The objective of treatment is to remove environmental triggers, break the itch–scratch cycle, and treat any underlying cutaneous or systemic disease. Topical steroids, with or without occlusion, and intralesional steroids are the mainstays of therapy. Other adjunctive therapies include topical and systemic antipruritic agents, calcineurin inhibitors, psychotherapy and psychotropic medications, acupuncture, TENS, ultraviolet light therapy, and focused ultrasound therapy.
