Abstract

Basic information about the synthesis, structure, and properties of silica aerogels, as well as modern strategies for the preparation of flexible hybrid silica aerogels, are presented. Hybrid silica aerogel blankets have a predominant market share today, but silica aerogel powder is gaining importance. Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of using silica aerogel to improve the thermal insulation properties of clothing and footwear where modern thermal insulation fibrous materials are too bulky for effective protection in extreme thermal environments and tend to lose thermal insulation under pressure. Silica aerogel potential is also in the development of textiles with improved sound insulation, chemical and fire protection, and for the remediation of wastewater in the textile industry. Silica aerogel for textile applications is produced in the forms of aerogel matrix composites, aerogel powder-fiber compacts, and nanocomposites. Some examples for the use of silica aerogel in clothing are highlighted. Silica aerogel fibers and nanocomposites are under development. Market trends are also presented.
