Abstract

This chapter describes the introduction of a new network into an established small business by providing an example of a real estate brokerage. The choices that a business makes are related not only to its size and current needs but also to the potential for further growth. The design for small-but-growing business's network has two major goals: it must support a Web server, and it must support the internal network. The internal network needs to be protected from Web traffic and security threats that may come in through the Internet. The file server should be protected with password user accounts. The users on the internal network will be downloading e-mail, some of which will have attachments, so they should have up-to-date virus and malware protection software, as well as personal firewalls.
