Abstract

Abstract Legislation concerning cosmetic products in the main markets worldwide demands the assurance of three very important features, namely safety, efficacy and quality of cosmetic products. One of the main aspects to be considered to assure these features concerns the cosmetic ingredients. Different authorities have used ingredients as a way to impose direct or indirect control of cosmetic products, thus enabling them to regulate and manage the market. The aim of this chapter is to give a specific overview of the requirements imposed by the main legislations on cosmetics (European Union, United States, Japan and South Korea) in terms of allowed, restricted or prohibited ingredients and their labelling requirements and other special requests. Readers can also find more detailed information on specific ingredients and/or groups of ingredients (UV filters, tanning and whitening agents, colouring agents, hair dyes, preservatives, perfumes, surfactants and others) in the following chapters of this book.
