Abstract
The analysis of cosmetic products constitutes a challenge mainly because of the large variety of ingredients and formulations, leading to huge matrix complexity and variability. Official methods of analysis of cosmetics are necessary to guarantee the compliance of these products on the market. However, the available official methods of analysis are insufficient, and thus, the development of robust and reliable analytical methods and their proposal as standards is encouraged. This chapter focusses mostly on the European market and its legislation, but also discusses the international level in terms of ISO standards. In this regard, the different approaches to select the most appropriate method and to standardize new or already developed methods are described. Finally, the current official methods of analysis of cosmetic products are summarized and discussed.
