Abstract
In this chapter, biochar production from renewable resources is briefly summarized. The definition and potential applications of biochar are introduced. Techniques for biochar production, including pyrolysis, gasification, hydrothermal carbonization, and other processes, are discussed involving technical parameters. Factors affecting biochar production are summarized mainly from the aspect of feedstocks and temperature. Also, the reaction mechanism of biochar formation is discussed at a molecular level. With a better understanding of biochar formation, functional materials derived from biochar with wide application will promote the sustainability of our society.
