Abstract

Although polymeric foams are used in a wide range of applications, their dependence on petroleum-based raw materials results in an adverse environmental impact. If biological materials can be used to replace these raw materials, these products can be produced with increased sustainability. Lignin is an abundant and renewable molecule with diverse functional groups and has potential to be used as a sustainable alternate raw material in common polymeric foams. This chapter will focus on the use of lignin as a substitute for polyols in polyurethane foams, phenols in phenolic foams, as a comonomer in starch foams, and as reactive reinforcement in these foams. Current challenges and limitations in the area of lignin-based polymeric foams will also be addressed.
