Abstract
This chapter presents the utilization of a battery energy storage system (BESS) to enhance the dynamic performance of islanded AC microgrids (IACMGs) against large load disturbances. In order to have a fair utilization of BESS, the mode control algorithm has been built for the load-leveling application, which involves storing the surplus power during non-disturbance periods and delivering it during periods of disturbance. To explore this, a complete dynamic model of BESS has been developed and incorporated into the studied IACMG system. Time domain simulations have been performed to evaluate the utilization of BESS and its mode control algorithm under different state-of-charges (SoCs) of the battery as well as different disturbance locations. The simulation results revealed that the utilization of BESS improves the dynamic performance of IACMGs against large load disturbances by maintaining the SoC in the range of safe charging status, that is, 20%<SoC≤80%.
