Abstract

When a robot sets out on a mission, it usually serves to assist humans by reaching out to places which are impossible to reach otherwise. However, in doing so, most robots rely on a power source like a re-chargeable battery which serves as a limiting factor for their mission. Such resources (battery, computational constraints, etc.) must be heeded while planning a mission, and this chapter provides systematic methodologies to do so in an offline or online fashion. This chapter opens up the discussion in a novel research arena primarily referred to as the operational range estimation (ORangE) for mobile robots operating in indoor or outdoor scenarios with the possibility to estimate the range in offline and online fashion. This is one of a kind approach and takes a maverick perspective on energy and endurance estimation works that were described earlier (in Chap. 10).
